There’s nothing more frustrating than realizing that your freezer is not getting cold enough. What’s even worse is finding that your food has become spoiled because of this issue and now must be used immediately or it has to be thrown out.
The problem could be a minor issue or it could be more serious. The trusted technicians at Appliance Wizards have prepared this handy list of reasons why your freezer may not be getting cold enough. Continue reading to find out how to solve your unit’s issue.
Freezer is Overloaded
There is a chance that your freezer isn’t working properly because there are far too many items in it. Overloading your freezer can prevent the air from circulating and not reaching everything.
Another problem with overcrowding your freezer is that some of the items may be blocking the fan. This will also stop the food from freezing completely. Try to rearrange the items or take some out if you can.
Check Door Seal
Another reason your freezer isn’t getting as cold as it should is that air is seeping out. Very often, this is due to a faulty door seal. Be sure to check the seal that goes around the inside of your freezer door.
It might have breaks or it may have come loose or lifted off the door. You can run your hands around the outside of the freezer door when it is closed to see if you can feel a cold draft escaping.
Dirty Condenser or Evaporator Coils
Located at the back of your fridge are the condenser coils. If there is a buildup of dirt or dust, they will start to retain heat and not function properly. This can cause your freezer and fridge to work too hard.
You can gently wipe the dirt off the coil with a damp cloth or a vacuum. Be careful with this as you don’t want to damage it. If you are not comfortable doing this, it’s important to call a repair person to assist you with this.
Compressor’s Faulty Start Relay
If your start relay is not working properly then the compressor is not getting enough power to function.
This will cause your freezer to not be cold enough. If you think this is your issue, call a repair person.
Faulty Evaporator Fan
The evaporator fan is what keeps the air moving inside your freezer. The air needs to be distributed evenly for all the food to freeze completely.
The blades on the fan could be covered in ice. If this is the issue, it’s best to call an appliance repair technician to assist with this.
Frost Buildup
If you have an older fridge, it could be full of frost. Unplug the fridge and let the ice melt off so you can remove it.
You should always unplug the fridge and remember not to remove the ice with a knife or sharp object.
