Whether your dryer is making a loud noise or it just doesn’t seem to be drying your clothes as well as it used to, chances are there’s something you can do to fix the problem. In this blog post, we’ll outline some simple tips for fixing a noisy or under-performing dryer. So before you go out and buy a new one, try these fixes first!
Drum Rollers and Axles
One common reason for noisy dryer problems is worn-out drum rollers. These rollers support the drum of the dryer and over time, they can become worn down or even broken.
If your dryer is making a funny noise, chances are it’s due to worn-out drum rollers. To fix this problem, simply replace the rollers with new ones.
Another common issue is worn-out axles. The axles support the drum rollers and if they’re worn out, the rollers can become loose and make a lot of noise. To fix this, simply replace the axles with new ones.
Drive Belt
Another common issue is a worn-out drive belt. The drive belt connects the motor to the drum of the dryer and over time, it can become stretched out or even broken.
If your dryer is making a loud noise or it’s not spinning properly, chances are the problem is a worn-out drive belt.
To fix your drive belt, a replacement will be required. You can accomplish this by opening your dryer, removing the drive belt wrapped around the dryer drum, and placing in a new belt.
Idler Pulley
The idler pulley creates tension on the drum belt which prevents slippage when the dryer has a load in it. Over time, it can become worn out.
If your dryer is making a loud noise or the drive belt is slipping, the problem may be a worn-out idler pulley.
You can access the idler pulley by removing the dryer cabinet – at which point you can test it (via a few sample turns) or simply replace it).
.
Blower Wheel
The blower wheel helps to circulate air through the dryer and over time, it can become unbalanced or even broken. If your dryer is making a loud noise or it’s not circulating air properly, the problem might be a damaged blower wheel.
To address a worn blower wheel, your key access points will be either the front or rear panel of the dryer – you should be looking for the blower wheel housing. Once in, you can assess the damage and replace the part if necessary.
Drum Glides
The drum glides help to support the drum of the dryer and over time, they can become worn out. If your dryer is making a loud noise or the drum isn’t spinning smoothly, chances are the problem is worn-out drum glides.
For the sake of replacing drum glides, you should be able to access them by removing the dryer cabinet. Most drum glides will require a screwdriver, however, some will be riveted in and require drilling. Once removed, you can insert a new drum glide.
Drum Bearing
The drum bearing helps to support the drum of the dryer and over time, it can become worn out.
If your dryer is making a loud noise or the drum isn’t spinning smoothly, chances are the problem is a worn-out drum bearing.
To assess your drum bearing, remove the dryer cabinet and pull the drive belt off of the dryer drum. Once in, you should be able to replace the drum bearing.
Drive Motor
The drive motor powers the drum of the dryer. You may be hearing some strange sounds coming from your dryer if there are issues with the drive motor.
If your dryer is making a loud noise or it’s not spinning properly, the problem may be a worn-out drive motor.
To fix this, remove the dryer cabinet and the dryer drum. Now that you’ve accessed the drive motor itself, you’ll be able to perform a proper inspection – and if necessary – make a replacement.
